The Washington Square Memorial

This extensive memorial was set up by residents of Greenwich Village in the days following the attacks. As access to areas below 14th Street was tightly controlled, this memorial pretty much reflects the local neighborhood. As the Village is considered to be perhaps the most cynical leftist neighborhood in the most cynical leftist city in the country, the display of grief and solidarity was stunning. Sure, there were a few more peace signs and a few less 'let's nuke 'em all' signs, but for New Yorkers to cast aside their cynicism like this shows the depths of feelings and unity the attacks created.
